Bio:
Slight, bordering on frail (at least as far as the Qunari are concerned), Cayda’s youth is obvious at first sight. With the slightly stretched out and bony look of one going through a growth-spurt, her hands are a shade too big for the rest of her and her hips and shoulder-blades show clearly under her silvery skin. Despite being of a moderate height for a Qunari girl of her age, she still stands eye-to-eye with most human men. Her eyes, which can barely be glimpsed beneath the Saarebas’ mask she wears, are an intensely vivid violet. Her mouth would be her best feature, even without the mask, not yet having been sewn shut….whether this is a mercy for a growing adolescent or simply a formality not yet attended to remains to be seen.
Words are the greatest danger of the Saarebas and well does the young woman know it. She speaks very rarely and in a soft voice, barely more than a whisper. Though she understands the Trade tongue, like most of her kind she does not speak it well. She is far more likely to use a few gestures if possible, murmuring her thoughts in her own tongue to her guardian if pressed.
Born as the first child in her small community in the year 9:16 Dragon, the one who would be one day called Caydanlik (Cayda, for friends or those in a hurry) was duly christened 1916 by the attending Tamaasran. Seed of a scholar, born of a teacher, no one expected that the child would be anything other than another Tamaasran herself in time. No one was more surprised than Cayda herself when, at age fourteen, she found herself summoning flame not from flint and tinder but from the very Fade itself.
As the only Saarebas that the village of Viindar had ever birthed and, indeed, the first such child that most there had ever seen, Cayda was an instant source of fear and anxiety to the rest of her kin. With no official Arvaarad about, one of the local ‘Seers’ of the Rivaini was brought in to keep watch, along with a half-dozen warriors, while missives were dispatched off to Par-Volen as to what was to be done.
For the next year, Cayda was silent, afraid to speak and infect the rest of the community. Far from resenting the future that she knew was planned for her, she was intensely relieved when the message and her first official Arvaarad arrived from Kont-arr in the early spring of 9:31 Dragon. Collared and chained, yet feeling somehow more free and safe than she had for more than a year, she willingly went along with her new overseer onto a ship bound for Par-Vollen.
The ship, alas, never arrived. Caught in the same storm that would strand the Arishok in Kirkwall, she soon washed ashore in unfamiliar territory…
